How to use this

Start with a country, a beginner programme or an element. Open a level to read its collected requirements. Expand programme stages to see the exercises inside.

Try double Axel or three turn in the search box. Results show available definitions and matching evidence; not every question can be answered from the collection.

Compare programmes with similar purposes, then inspect their stages and requirements. Similar content does not mean the tests have the same difficulty or that one qualification transfers to another country.

Follow source links to check the original context. Where saved documents are available, you can read them here. Documents keep their dates; translations may be working translations rather than official wording.

This is a growing collection, not every requirement from every country. Missing results can mean missing or untranslated evidence, not that a skill is absent from a country’s programme. Read the coverage notes before drawing conclusions.

Coverage, updates and corrections

This is a growing reference, not a complete collection of every test. Material may be partial, historical or a working translation. No match does not mean a country does not teach an element.

Reference presentation updated . This is not a claim that every source was checked on that date. Individual documents retain their own dates and limitations.

Dance Assessment Resource Guide February 2026 Copyright © 2026 Skate Canada 8 Definitions Partner* This term indicates that a dance is being performed in the traditional style with one skater (skater B) skating the B steps (lead steps) and another skater (skater A) skating the A steps (follow steps). Skaters will be in a hold for the majority of the dance. Under the direction of a registered Skate Canada Professional Coach in good standing, a dance partner may assist the skater in completing the dance assessment. The dance partner must be a registrant or a coach in good standing with Skate Canada. Progressive (Forward/Backward) A step or sequence of steps in which the free foot passes the skating foot before it is placed on the ice, thereby bringing the new free foot off the ice trailing the new skating foot. Roll* A roll is a short or long, forward or backward edge skated on a curve. Rhythm The regularly repeated pattern of accented and unaccented beats which gives the music its character. Set Pattern Dance A patten dance for which the location, direction and curvature of all edges to be skated are designated in the diagram. This diagram must be followed as closely as possible. Shadow* This term indicates that a dance is being performed by two skaters skating the same steps, either B steps (skater b - lead) or A steps (skater A - follow). Each skater is skating individually. Shadow dance is performed by establishing one side of the ice surface to represent the sun and skating the pattern of the dance with another skater (may be coach, current or former skater in good standing) skating the same pattern as their shadow throughout the dance assessment. As the pair skates the dance, the shadow will change sides from one side of the skater to the other so that their pattern will be crossed at each end of the ice surface to create over lapping patterns. Shadow is not to be performed as “follow the leader” or side-by-side without changing sides. Slide Chassé A forward slide chassé is the same as a chassé except that on the second step the free foot slides off the ice in front of the skating foot. Solo* This term indicates that a dance is being performed by one skater only. Swing Roll (Forward/Backward) A Roll held for several beats of music during which, when skating backward, the free leg lifts and then first swings forward, then backward past the skating foot, then back beside to skate the next step. When skating forward, the free leg first swings backward, then forward and then back beside to skate the next step. The swing of the leg gives the sense of a “rolling movement”. Tempo The speed of music in beats or measures per minute. Timing Error* Steps performed that do not match the musical timing identified. These steps may not exceed 25% of a pattern/sequence.
